NZ Elections 2014

Elections? The first day we started on this topic....I simply had no idea what it was. All I knew was that you vote. But after that first lesson, I learnt ten times more than I did before. What did I actually learn? Keep reading to find out.

LESSON #1 - What is exactly...elections?
The elections is when you vote for a political party of parliament to become the government.
Voting is not compulsory.

LESSON #2 - What is parliament?
Our parliament is split into two parts:
The sovereign (the king or queen) and the House of Representatives. The sovereign is represented by the Governor General in New Zealand.
120 elected members of parliament make up the House of Representatives.
Sometimes our system of government is called the Westminster because New Zealand's parliament is modelled on the British parliament.
Our parliament does a lot of things to help our country. It passes new laws, it represents people, it keeps the government accountable and it approves how tax money is spent.

LESSON #3 - Now lets focus on elections....
A general election happens every three years.
To vote, you have to be a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident. The age restriction is 18 and over.
You have two kinds of votes.
PARTY VOTE - This vote is when you choose your preferred political party.
ELECTORATE VOTE - This vote is when you choose the person you want to represent your local electorate.
Elections are always held on Saturday which is called Polling day.

Well that's it for now. BYEEEEE!
P.S please comment. :-)
